Give your Metabolism a Boost
Friday, 4 February 2011

Your metabolism is affected by physical and chemical processes and determines how fast it burns fuel. It is your individual system and will be different to the next person’s metabolism. However, there are some things you can do to increase the rate and burn more kilojoules overall.
Here are some tips to give your metabolism a boost and kick it into gear.
1. Do resistance training
The more muscle you build, the less fat you will have. Muscle burns more kilojoules than fat, even once you have stopped exercising and sitting on the couch. It elevates your metabolism for the entire day.
2. Eat breakfast
Breakfast is just that-breaking a fast. When your body receives less kilojoules (as when you are sleeping), the metabolism slows down. Breakfast is important as it switches it back on, ready to burn fuel. You will also be less likely to eat a high fat/sugar snack at morning break. Studies have indicated that breakfast will boost your metabolism and therefore burning more calories than not eating breakfast, which will leave you feeling with a lack of energy.
3. Do aerobic activity
It’s a great heart work out and burning plenty of calories. Your metabolism will have to work really hard. Try anything from jogging, jumping, cycling, swimming or an aerobics class.
4. Drink green tea
It is known for being a metabolism booster and contains calorie burning catechins, as well as being full of anti-oxidants, reducing risk of disease and providing fluid.
5. Exercise early
Onset your metabolism early by exercising early and keep it working throughout the remainder of the day. Feel revitalised and full of energy.
6. Drink more water
Aim for 8 glasses of 250ml glasses of water every day. The energy burning process of metabolism needs water to work effectively. In addition, the drinking cool water makes your metabolism work harder as it changes the water to body temperature.
