Although a certain amount of sodium is essential for maintaining proper nerve and muscle function, many of us consume far more than the recommended limit of 2,300 mg (one teaspoon) each day without even realising it. Too much salt can increase your risk of high blood pressure, kidney stones, gastric ulcers and osteoporosis- and make it far harder for you to lose weight.
The trouble is that salt is habit-forming. Research has shown that a salty taste activates pleasure receptors in the brain. And the more your taste buds are used to salty foods, the more you need to satisfy your cravings. But because this is an acquired taste, you can ‘re-train’ your taste buds and wean yourself off it.
