You’ve heard it time and time again: don’t skip breakfast. Starting your day with a good, healthy breakfast gets your metabolism started and supports your weight loss efforts, giving you plenty of energy to get you through the day. But what should you be eating? Here are some good healthy options to include in your breakfast…
Fresh fruit. Fruit is high in fibre, which keeps you feeling fuller for longer. So by eating fruit first thing in the morning, you will be less hungry later on and less likely to snack on sugary foods. Fruit is also a great natural source of essential vitamins of minerals, which are important for giving your body the nutritional support it needs to function effectively, particularly when you are trying to lose weight.
Natural yoghurt. Natural yogurts contain good bacteria that is important for supporting your overall health as well as aiding your weight loss efforts. This bacteria works to break down sugars and starches in the body. Yogurt also tends to be low-GI, so it will keep you feeling full throughout the morning. Choose low-fat versions and you’ll get the delicious fruity taste without loading on lots of extra calories.
Whole grains. Early morning is the best time to be eating carbs, as they’ll give you the energy you need to get through the rest of the day. When you eat cereal for breakfast, choose whole-grain varieties. These will keep you feeling full and stop you from snacking later on. Check the package carefully though to make sure your cereal isn’t loaded up with sugar, and try to stick to the suggested serving size, although it might seem small at first.
Eggs. Don’t believe the rumours- eggs are not the weight loss enemy. In fact, they’re a great breakfast option when you’re trying to lose weight, as they’ll give you a big protein kick early on in day. They are also full of nutrients like vitamins B and K, as well as folic acid, which is particularly important for women’s overall health. There are so many different ways to prepare eggs, but the healthiest is to poach or boil them. Cook them up with some spinach and mushrooms for some extra protein. But just remember not to add that side of bacon!
Natural raw honey. This is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth without damaging your diet. Natural raw honey works to break down the bad cholesterol in the body and dissolve fatty acids. So adding a little honey to your whole-grain cereal gives you a great sweet flavour and a natural energy boost, while actually helping you to reach your weight loss goals.
Low fat milk. Many people don’t get enough calcium or vitamin D. Adding some low-fat milk to your breakfast is a good way to make sure you get the nutrients you need. Milk has some important health benefits and helps you to stay feeling full, so pouring a little over your whole-grain cereal or using it in a smoothie gives you a good start to the morning.
Combine several of these elements into your morning diet plan and you’ll have a delicious, low-fat breakfast that keeps you feeling full and energised. Some great ideas include:
And many more! Just remember to keep your portion sizes under control and enjoy a healthy, nutritious start to the day.
