Researchers have found yet another significant reason to reduce your total kilojoules-protecting your memory. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences discovered that a 30% reduction in total kilojoules for 3 months by eating smaller portions, showed a 20% improvement in memory performance. Researchers believe this may be due to the reduced inflammation and insulin in the participants, who ended up losing up to 3kg. Participants average age was around 60 years and were either normal to overweight. Many individuals may be overestimating how much they are burning when they are exercising and therefore eating more than what they have burnt afterwards. A study published in The Public Library of Science found that overweight women who exercised about 2 hours a week without dieting a few kilograms in 6 months. Interestingly, those who exercised more than any other participants, approximately 3 hours a week did not lose as much as foreseen. This is possible due to the extra kilojoules eaten post-exercise. People might reward themselves after exercise, not realizing they are jeopardising all the hard work that went in the first place. Remember, diet and exercise go hand in hand. Continue to make good choices after your workout to keep you on track.
