Alcohol has been integrated into our lives. With so many occasions to celebrate-Weddings, Christmas, Birthdays, Anniversaries, New Years Eve, weekend BBQ’s, Sport-the list is endless.
Did you know that alcohol are ‘empty calories’? That is they offer us nothing but calories in return. We get no nutritional gain from it. Even worse, the body uses alcohol kilojoules first before it even considers fats or carbohydrates that you also consumed. The body is likely to store these as fat if not used up.
Further, alcohol can increase your feelings of hunger or at least increase your appetite. Often alcohol plays tricks with your mind and weakens your determination to eat well. You will be more likely to be tempted by high fat/sugar foods the more you have drunk. In addition, the way you feel the morning after is less than likely to make you feel like exercise. As well as jeopardizing your exercise routine, you will be more likely to give in to poor food choices to nurse that hangover.
How can you reduce your alcohol intake?
Australian Guidelines
Women: no more than 2 standard drinks a day on average.
Men: alcohol should be no more than 4 standard drinks on average.
Any more than those amounts is considered excessive and can impair your long-term health and risk of injury. Refer to the Australian Guidelines for more information.
Consider alcohol as a treat and incorporate it into your lifestyle like you do with treats-in moderation.

- Chose nips of spirits mixed with diet soft drinks, soda or tonic water.
- Mix wine with soda water to dilute your alcoholic drink to half a measure. This will also help hydrate you.
- Avoid pre-mixed drinks in bottles and cans or cocktails with high sugar juices and cream.
- Alternate your drinks with water to reduce your intake and prevent dehydration.
- Chose to be the designated driver so you won’t drink or be offered alcoholic drinks.
- Always check the alcohol content on the label. They all vary in strength.
